Well, that's one way it can try to go about it. There's also getdomainname(), on systems that have it, or uname(). One might also argue that it would be reasonable to just fail or give the short name - i.e., it's the admin's responsibility to make "hostname -f" work, by setting the kernel's hostname to the fqdn. > This is one of the reasons that personally I prefer setting the > hostname to the fully qualifed domain name.
