But there are larger issues, such as the fact that `\` isn't escaping anything, it's a "skipped character". I submitted a patch that addresses the issues reported here as well as others https://sourceware.org/pipermail/binutils/2024-June/134936.html. I marked that as RFC because it has a small change of behavior: treat \ as literal character. That's justified by the fact that nobody could possibly have relied on it because of these off by one errors.
