A SIGILL is very suspicious and indicates that there may well be some kind of
hardware/memory problem with the machine that you are using.

Which again makes me think that the problem could be unrelated to the binutils
source code itself, but rather an issue with the runtime environment.

Are you able to try running the test on a different machine as well ?  That
might provide some interesting results...
