Hi Markus,
This appears to be a bit of a minefield. But if you need a workaround,
trying adding a ranlib step to the process. IE:
% gcc -c -flto a.c
% ar cr a.a a.o
% gcc b.c a.a
% strip --strip-unneeded a.a
% ranlib a.a
% gcc b.c a.a
