Hi Luke,
Thanks for submitting this bug report and patch. I am sorry that it has
taken me so long to get around to reviewing this PR.
The patch itself seems fine to me, although I wonder if treating the hidden
symbols as debugging symbols will turn out to have some unforeseen
consequences. Time will tell...
I have applied the patch, along with a ChangeLog entry, so for now I consider
this PR closed.
