How about --enable-assembler-compressed-debug-sections or --enable-compressed-debug-sections-in-assembler?
Either is OK, but ... if we agree that we should also being configuring the linker to also generate compressed debug sections by default, then it would make sense to just have one configure option that applies to both tools.
