This version of my patch modifies the reverse test so that it doesn't need
xfails, and adds an interleave test.

The interleave test does not reliably detect the problem, however, because the
output file is correct because it gets fixed up elsewhere. Valgrind confirms
that it is reading uninitialized memory. Setting the padding to a very large
value probably would cause it to misbehave more often, but still not reliably.
