Can you try changing that to ":text = 0x90909090" in arch/x86/kernel/vmlinux.lds.S? This is definitely a gold bug, or at least a difference between gold and bfd, but I doubt it's causing your problem, since using :text = 0x00009090 on bfd still produces a working kernel for me. That being said, I just generated a working kernel with GNU gold (version 2.23.2) 1.11.
