GNU as (with no special command-line options) apparently goes into an infinate loop. I can reproduce the problem on i386 platforms in the as on Red Had Linux release 9 SuSE Linux 8.2 SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 3 which have various versions of as, from 2.13 to 2.15.
