I am bootstrapping my Solaris 9, so have installed mostly binary packages from the Sunfreeware.com site: gcc-small-3.3.2-sol9-sparc-local flex-2.5.31-sol9-sparc-local coreutils-4.5.4-sol9-sparc-local make-3.80-sol9-sparc-local I now got myself through the problem by doing: cd binutils CC=gcc ./configure before running the script mentioned in the binutils/README file.
