If you read further in that thread, you'll find a message I sent out on 9/2 containing a patch that adds a `direxpand' option. The new option is intended to restore the bash-4.1 behavior of performing word expansion on variables in directory names when completing. It works pretty well; there are a couple of rough edges that will be worked out. Look for <4e612f5b.5040...@case.edu>.
