but not with plain xterm or gnome-terminal. Upgrading to the latest

That's interesting, since none of the patches so far have dealt with
readline display or prompt expansion.
Odd. The earlier version does not cause it to happen now. So, I don't know what
caused it. Perhaps I did something screwy in the original patch/compile sequence.
