F77 search order change request

Can I ask that you consider making it such that gfortran is selected in 
preference to g77 for F77 if both are available on a system?

We seem to get no end of user problems created by mixing of g77 for .f 
files (that sometimes are fixed format fortran 90) and gfortran for .f90 
files. g77 of course relates to the old gcc 3.x series, while gfortran 
relates to the newer gcc 4.x series.
