Thanks for the report. I tried to reproduce this with m4 1.4.5, the oldest version that we currently claim to support, and didn't even get that far: autom4te_perllibdir='..'/lib AUTOM4TE_CFG='../lib/autom4te.cfg' ../bin/autom4te -B '..'/lib -B '..'/lib --language=autotest -I . - -I . suite.at -o testsuite.tmp tools.at:94: /home/e/ericb/m4-1.4.5/src/m4: Warning: sub-expression 1 not present autom4te: /home/e/ericb/m4-1.4.5/src/m4 failed with exit status: 1 This was fixed in 1.4.6 to make regexp and patsubst be silent if a subexpression is empty but the overall regexp matched. Since 1.4.6 is now 2 years and 11 months old (and only one month newer than 1.4.5), I'm okay with raising our minimum requirement, at the same time as fixing the testsuite to tolerate 1.4.6. I'll be committing something shortly, once a testsuite completes successfully under m4 1.4.6... - -- Don't work too hard, make some time for fun as well!
