In order to check whether this a problem with the Emacs mode or GNU APL itself, I tested it on the command line using the nabla-editor. Since I always use the Emacs mode, I was not aware of the behavior you explained above, so it confused me and I came to the wrong conclusion that it indeed was a problem with GNU APL itself.
