Sometimes, yes. Letting the Baum display sleep and then waking it is another common cause; it may be an issue with the Baum driver. I'm suspecting more than one cause. I rebuilt BRLTTY with debug symbols yesterday (CFLAGS='-g -O0') and received my first crash this morning.
