Actually, on the Mac the screen driver comes up by default so that designation isn't necessary.
Hmmm, if this is a screen problem, perhaps I should check to see if it is specific to screen-4.2.1 or if the same happens using screen-4.0.1. Perhaps it has something to do with the screen patch with brltty rather than screen itself. If that is the case, screen-4.0.1 may not have this problem. What I had not tried was doing it in linux with the screen driver. With the linux driver it works fine so obviously it has something to do with screen and/or screen and brltty. I would say it is something to do with the addition of screen to brltty since I have no trouble with a regular keyboard. Wow!
