Are the Advance keys just inside the rockers, just outside the shfit keys,
Correct.
spaced somewhat away from both, or what?
No spacing really. It's like this:
the outermost keys, the Selector, are given a round concave face, although
they are in fact sitting on a square base.
Then the rockers, well they're pretty easily identifiable as rockers, even
though the bottom part is raised a bit.
Then the so called advance keys... now I feel closely, they're the same
square base as the selectors, but the outer face isn't given that circular
shape. They do instead have some kind of raised shape on them but it feels
less prominent, it's a double arrow pointing left on the left one and
right on the right one, but those are not immediately obvious IMO.
All these keys are just side by side, indeed there isn't a lot of the edge
left that isn't covered with keys.
The shift buttons are a bit different: rectangular with no other shape on
them, but located on a sort of prominance in the case: it protrudes out a
bit around the space bar that's a top the device.
Still, seems to me the order is the key thing, the physical
characteristics are a bit too subtle.
so we might just say that the front edge has the Selector keys at each
end, and then working towards the middle, the rockers, then the Advance keys,
and in the middle, the left and right shift keys.
I think it's more complex than that because some models also have what are
called bumper keys.
Oh? I'm not aware of those.
