Great news! I did something similar with good results so far. I have macports installed so I used —prefix=/opt/local. I still want to keep my additions away from the tree in the official OS. I did a sudo make install without bothering to create symlinks to the binary. Finally, you can do a sudo screan without specifying the absolute path. You can verify the location of the binary with which screen.
I guess we can conclude that any additional patches applied by macports may not be required for our purposes. I’ll leave you with one final goody. I was able to access an older serial braille display using a keyspan usb to serial adapter. The mac driver provided a tty device with which brltty could communicate without any issues.
