It's because some kernels don't have pcspkr, the kernel module which implements the console beep, either built in or loaded so brltty does it and tells you that it did it. >Unknown packet: 42 and 16 Unknown byte messages. This is a known problem. It seems to afflict USB connections. It's cause hasn't been tracked down yet but brltty deals with it.
