The acceptable justification for the disappearance of the slave
daughter and the appearance of the children/grandchildren was that the
slave daughter had joined a religious fanatical sect.
So, all this happened because people are tolerant of religious
fanaticism.

i don't think you can assume this happened because people are tolerant
of religious fanaticism.  i think the neighbors (and the mother?) were
told the daughter ran away to join a cult and then dropped her children
off on the doorstep with a note she was unable to care for them.
