      Paramedics

What they do: Paramedics respond to emergency situations and
attempt to provide the necessary medical care, whether it
involves transporting participants to a hospital or treating
     them on the scene.

Surprising salary: $27,070. Seeing as paramedics have high
stress jobs that require them to be on call and ready to save
lives at a moment's notice, you might expect their mean annual
     salary to be higher.

This one disappoints me, but doesn't surprise me: people who take care
of people generally don't make much money doing it. We much prefer to
overpay people who are "stars", rather than those who make sure that
young people learn, old people stay alive, and injured people survive.

I found the nearly-$70,000 average for fashion designers surprising
because it's a little like an entry- or mid-level job in film or TV:
it often pays in bragging rights ("I'm working for Paramount", or "I'm
a fashion designer") more than salary.

I'm happy that working on the Internet pays enough for me to live here
in Silicon Valley, but mainly because I bought my house a long time ago
and in a moderately crappy location.

Dave
