Losing the passports is our big worry too. As you say, I also thought that carrying them with us at all times was a silly risk and unnecessary. At no stage during the entry formalities were we told that it was a requirement. Still think it,s utterly stoopid, but with the note the mongrel supposedly left on our records, we are in no position to ignore it (especially if we want to extend our stay in the country next year).
