I've read his first two novels _Grimus_ and _Midnight's Children_ and
have the next two in my 'to be read' pile where they have been for the
last 20+ years.

_Grimus_ is an above average fantasy novel. _Midnight's Children_ is a
magical realist novel about the creation of modern India. Of the two I
haven't read _The Satanic Verses_ is the one that got Rushdie a fatwah.

You should probably start with _Midnight's Children_ as it's his most
highly regarded work and I found it very readable unlike his later
stuff.
