It isn't a novel and I don't anyone would call it major, but there's an interesting short story by Bruce Boston called "Surreal Chess." It's rather, um, surreal. It's available at fictionwise.com for 49 cents. And there is a chess metaphor repeated throughout the first 20 or so minutes of the movie _Independence Day__.
