I think what Warren meant was that it was a good compliment to Chelsea
and a bit of a backhand against her dad at the same time. That's
certainly how I interpreted it.

I'm sorry to hear that the interview was supposed to be for background
only. I hate it when reporters do things like that.

If I remember correctly, the author of the article, Jodi Kantor, was
hired to be the Arts and Leisure editor in 2003. I vaguely recall
that a lot of long-time employees of the Times thought she was too
inexperienced for the editor position, but her hiring was widely
praised by many of the younger writers. She had previously worked at
Slate, where she was pretty well respected but seemed more oriented to
pop culture. She had stepped down from the editorial post to take a
regular reporter gig back in 2005.

These days, Kantor seems to mostly write political articles, and from
what I remember recently, mostly about Obama. I don't know whether or
not her background gives you any insight into why she would go against
the request to not be named of someone who could have developed into a
good source, but that's what I remember about her.

Anyway, I hope Guatam writes (or has already written) a letter to the
editor to complain about being quoted against his request.
