Given the nature of some of the discussions here, I'd be happier if the only archives were members' own mailboxes. Enough people have collections going way way back that anyone after a particular bit of writing could probably ask nicely for it. You could maintain the current archive by subscribing the current list to wherever the new list is hosted, and turning off the mailing out....
