I don't want want to really disagree with the basic conclusion of the above
quote, but I do want to point out that the above is a non-sequitiur.
There is no theoretical reason why the US couldn't correct the trade
imbalance by increasing its exports of services.

Hmm, such as?

We're already importing medium-tech services such as call centers and tech support; and we're importing programming; and we're importing some medical jobs such as X-ray diagnostics.

What services do you imagine the US can export that can't be bought more cheaply in other nations already?
