The problem, I think, is that such individuals just haven't learned how to talk to adults yet. They're still stinging from the alienation they felt as teenagers and are still reacting with hostility to any opposition to any declarations they make.


Questioning such an individual's views translates into a direct challenge of their intellectual authority, a kind of personal affront. This generates a hostile response which is not too different from the sneers of contempt they would wear when deriding the popular kids in high school. You really can't deal with those people; you have to wait for them to mature out of it.

One of the reasons I've been trying to point out Erik's hypocrisy is that I hope he'll start self-evaluating a little, but I'm not holding my breath, because that would mean a concession on his part that I've got a legitimate point.

That said, it took me a while to grow out of it myself. ;)
