The thing about Eliza is that it picks out key words from what you type and repeats them in a way that mimics comprehension in a superficial way, but of course the program doesn't really understand anything you type.
Given the frequency with which many humans do the same ("Yes, dear." "Of course I'm listening, dear." "Uh-huh."), one wonders why no one thinks that Eliza met the conditions of the Turing test . . .
