On the topic of "less heavy contact," I've been frustrated lately (I'm a new green belt -- about equivalent to sophomore level) in that there's only one other green belt in my evening classes, and he's very edgy about contact. While our instructors try to remind us that this is, in fact, marshall arts, so we might expect to go home with bruises now and then, this guy is constantly flinching and telling me to back off.
That's pretty bad considering that you're only doing TKD style point fighting, replete with, I would assume, the standard TKD style body armor (chest protector)?
Of course many of the people in the intermediate belt area are prone to uncontrolled technique, and in some cases are a tad too aggressive for their skill level. So if I were sparring with you in the semi-relaxed atmosphere of my own dojo, I'd get pissed as hell if you were wantonly throwing kicks and backfists around, you know? At the same time though, and if this is truly not the case, someone acting like that is only detrimental to your training Dave. So unless your instructor only lets you spar with other intermediate belts, or if your class is limited to intermediate belts, I'd ask your sensei to allow you to spar with some of the advanced guys. If this is not possible during class, see if you can get some of the advanced guys to work with you a little, either before or after class. I'm sure someone would be willing to help you out.
