There are two reasons for this:

1) The Catholic Church officially teaches that contraception is an
objective moral evil for reasons completely unrelated to abortion.
The Catholic Church has also of course consistently taught that one
may not commit an objective moral evil to prevent another objective
moral evil.

2) If you believe that life begins at conception, as I do, then many
devices which you would call "contracpetion" I would
call "abortion." There is, of course, nothing logically
inconsistent about refusing to recommend very early abortions in
order to prevent later abortions when you are opposed to all
abortions in the first place.
