Well, one reason might be that US papers might not think that the story is
true....

I certainly have no way of knowing, but I will say that my general
experience is that US papers tend to have a higher standard of eveidence
for breaking a story than UK papers.   For example, remember how it was UK
papers that "broke" the Kerry-intern story?
