excerpts:

John Kerry, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, hauled in
$50m in campaign contributions during the first quarter of the year,
shattering his party's fundraising records and fuelling his challenge to
President George W. Bush.

....

Mr Kerry's coffers still pale in comparison with Mr Bush's $182m
war chest, nearly twice the total he raised in his successful 2000
presidential bid.

....

Mr Kerry is in desperate need of money to counter a barrage of
television advertisements from the Bush campaign that have chipped away
at his standing. Mr Bush has spent $40m on television advertising in the
past month, much of it aimed at persuading the public that the still
relatively unknown Mr Kerry would raise taxes and is soft on national
defence and terrorism. Mr Kerry has spent just $6m on advertising over
the same period.
