I now think the best place to put the story would be on Adirondak. Say the 
GIM wanted a small survey to see if there was any damage done to the ecology by 
Earthclan's attempt to colonize it.

This way I can have the story set as early as I want to after contact.

(When the Tytlal are still discovering Earth's old programing.)

All I need for the story's setting is an uninhabited planet, a few dropped 
cubes such as the one pictured at the end of Brightness Reef, with a smaller 
survey party traveling to one of these cubes.

The Synthian then traps the rest of the party in the cube and bolts out for 
reasons unknown.

It'd work.

All this work for an old sight gag....
