Today someone in my office made a wisecrack about how a Kerry/McCain ticket could prove to be disastrous for the Republicans this November. I pointed out that McCain isn't a Democrat... but the idea intrigued me nonetheless.

Hypothetically, if McCain switched sides and joined the Dems, AND signed on for VP on a ticket with Kerry, do y'all think they'd have a chance? He'd be more appealing than Edwards....

Ha! Writing this out, it seems a little ridiculous. Sort of like the Superman vs. Batman speculative yet useless discussions I had as a kid. :) I'm still curious what everyone thinks tho.

When people contemplate Pres/VP matchups, it seems to imply there's be some
kind of dynamic partnership, with the two combining their strengths. But it
seems to me that the reality of it is that the VP has only a small role in White House
policymaking, not much more than any of the Secretaries might have. So really the
main concern about a VP is whether he'll be competent to step in in case the
president dies. And even that isn't a big voting factor for many people, since Bush Sr.
managed to get elected despite Quayle.

Here's a hypothetical scenario for you that I thought about last year:
What if McCain switched to Democrat, and then won the primaries to become the
Democrat presidential contender, with Kerry or Dean as VP to appeal to the further
left part of the party. :-)
