The whole concept of 'beauty contests' really makes my teeth grind, in part because it is just so superficial. In talent shows, essay contests or game-type shows, almost any child can participate at some level, but if the genetic dice dealt a kid snake eyes in the looks department, she can only feel devalued and hopelessly behind (well, there *is* cosmetic surgery, but many parents can't afford that). Why not a talent competition, and then boys and girls could both participate? Maybe have different categories: art, music, dance, humor, science or misc. and a couple of prizes for most unusual, best pet, or whatever?
