Tryptophan got pulled from a lot of places sometime around 1990. (1989? I was using it in late 1988, early 1989, and it helped me some -- but it could have been placebo effect, for all I know.) Never tried Melatonin.
Melatonin is actually a *little* more effective for me than Trypto. Melatonin also has the pretty cool side effect of being an anti-aging hormone. ;-)
However, I stopped taking it a while ago.
Dan's experience is that if he exercises, he gets clearer signals from his body as to just what it wants or needs, and he is *less* hungry if he's getting enough exercise...
As far as exercise goes, I've recently added Tai Chi to my regime. I've been at it for three weeks now, and the experience is incredible. It's dramatic, even, what Tai Chi does for your energy levels.

Hey, you've got a mind -- try to have fun with it during those times! :) (My mother regularly wakes up for an hour or two in the middle of the night, and years ago decided to try to *enjoy* it, and she's been generally happier since.)

You know, I've never thought about it that way!! Thanks for that idea. ;)
