Syon Monastery

Syon Monastery, Middlesex, England, founded in 1415 by King Henry V at his
manor of Isleworth. The "Monastery of St. Saviour and St. Bridget of Syon" was
the only one in England belonging to the modified order of St. Augustine, as
reformed by St. Bridget (see BRIGITTINES), and comprised thirteen priests,, four
deacons, and eight lay brethren, besides sixty nuns. The property extended
for half a mile along the bank of the Thames, near Twickenham; and the chief
duty of the community was to pray for the souls of the royal founder and his near
relatives and for all the faithful departed. Martin V confirmed the
foundation in 1418, and the first novices were professed in 1420.

A Brief History of Sion Mills

Sion Mills (Seein or Muileann an tSiain - from Irish "mill of the fairy
hill") situated close to Strabane, Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Sion Mills owes
much of its prosperity to the Herdman family who established a flax spinning
mill here in 1835 (still today spinning flax). Prior to the Herdmans a Flour
Mill, a small school and a few houses were all Sion consisted of. It was not
until 1883 that Sion became Sion Mills the name given to the new railway station.
With the early success of the mill expansion began. In 1845 a new water wheel
was erected to produce sufficient power and in the following year Sion house
was finished. This house was constructed for James Herdman who moved in on 20
May 1846 and was very different from todays Sion House, being of a square
shaped and classical design. It was designed by Charles Lanyon of Belfast.
