The air was stuffy inside the toffee-colored trailer, where about a dozen
believers sat rapt in straight-backed chairs and watched a videotape
about the beginning � and the end � of the world. The narrator, a
middle-aged man dressed in a maroon cardigan and navy blue pants, spoke
with the calm confidence of Mister Rogers, even when he pattered about
quantum physics, pink light waves, and jet fountains spewing from beneath
the oceans, causing the Great Flood.

Evolution wasn't the only theory under attack at the July 9 State Board
of Education textbook hearing: the once-innocuous home economics � now
known as consumer science � raised the hackles of several Texans.
Eleanor Hutchison called the consumer science textbooks' discussion of
HIV/AIDS "shameful," blaming the increase in AIDS cases on the fact that
"no quarantine has been established."
