Hi Michael,
Just wanted to clarify something: I don't believe that it is possible to prove *this* example of a negative scientifically, but I'm almost positive (no pun intended) that you can prove negatives scientifically.
For example: You can prove that a man is not a plank of wood scientifically.

I don't know where I saw it, but I've seen this argument referred to in the past as the 'universal existential negative' argument, which basically says you cannot prove that something (God) doesn't exist.
