Most all religious canon has specific statements on how to determine this.
Each one is different from the rest. Most all of them encourages people to
listen to themselves ("the still small voice" or "The Calling").
I don't think there is much to discuss, since it always comes down to once
confidence in their God.
I do find it interesting how Satan has never ordered or caused the death of
anyone in the Bible, but God has, through revelation. Why is it that Satan
seems almost lame and ineffective compared to many of the monsters of
humanity Hitler, Stalin, etc).
But for Jan's sake, I do understand your argument about "How does one
tell?". My mother received revelation in church last week that she needed to
pass a message to my sister, which was "Start Going to Church!". My first
thought was, well... I won't go there....
The trap you are setting won't work, for faith requires a trust that one's
power of discretion between messages from God or the Devil. This faith has
no logical basis to attack, but it is very real to true believers. You can't
argue against that.
