I think the most simple solution is that you have a faulty thermostat. Alternatively, you may have a problem with the roof vents, where you are getting a backflow of hot air that is in your attic into your house. It appears that you have radiative heating, as opposed to central air, so you may not have positive air pressure in your house that normally keeps the hot air out from the attic. If you have radiative heating, you may not have more modern roof vents, that can include a fan to draw heat out of the attic.
