Atheists tend to be a rather logical lot (whether you agree with their logic is another matter) and when they perceive a religious person (especial one who is an intellectual or a scientist) having such illogical beliefs it can get quite annoying.
To which I have to respond that if anyone had witnessed and experienced what I have witnessed and experienced, the only logical result would be to believe. Before anyone asks, no, I can't offer you any "proof" of the reality of those experiences other than my own accounts of them, which would be no more than hearsay and might indeed be untrue. Each person must obtain his or her own evidence. (Sorry. Those are the rules. I didn't make them, and if at some point I was asked to provide any input on them, I don't remember it. ;-) )
Like if a stanch Christian encountered someone who was telling people to fornicate in the name of the lord.
Actually, a friend of mine ended up involved with a so-called "Christian" cult which believed in exactly that as a form of missionary work.

To many atheists religion is clearly a social control mechanism which has nothing at all to do with reality.
Since we're speaking of scientists and logic: all scientists and mathematicians learn early on in their formal training that when a statement contains such words as "clearly" or "obviously" it is more often than not incorrect.
