Yes, Ontario got rid of it in 95 or so. It was brought in by the NDP
government in the early 90's and taken out by the PC government
shortly after election. Everyone was quite sure it was just a cash
grab. I remember hearing how one of the $80,000 units would pay for
itself in 8 hours.

They were eliminated for both the presumed guilty reason and the
public outcry of accusations of the government just trying to create
another revenue stream to make up for a growing deficit created by a
very socialist government.

Unfortunately, I have heard that certain municipalities are bringing
it back. It is still legal for police departments to use them if they
want.
