You don't know what degree of injury will lead to death, or how long it'll
take the dog to go there.

I *have* been attacked by a strange dog, but he grabbed me by an arm that
was in a winter-jacket sleeve. No appropriate weapon was available and he
was run off the playground by the teacher and a few boys; if something had
been done to kill him, I think I'd be feeling somewhat guilty about it
years later, even though it would have been the owners' fault. (He had a
collar and tags, which made getting him off my arm a little easier, but
also indicated that there was someone who had theoretically taken
responsibility for him. Never saw him again.)

I *have* been prepared to kick a dog in the throat once or twice, but it's
never come to that. The worst I ever had to deal with that didn't also
involve a dog of my own, I managed to psych the dogs out (but was prepared
to kick one in the throat and let Dan deal with the other). Ever make 2
Dobermans turn tail and run? >:)
