Actually, I suppose it is representative of the frequent use of agricultural metaphors, like "my little cabbage," as a term of endearment. France is sort of like Japan. You spend a month or two there and you think you understand the culture. But after a few more months, you realize that you don't have a clue about most of it. On the other hand they are opposites -- the Japanese tend to assimilate foreign culture and the French resist it. People are so... weird.
