Since the Feds banned OTC use of theophylline in 1995 (IIRC?), OTC products for the treatment of asthma and similar conditions have been ephedrine-based. Around here, at least, name-brand Primatene costs nearly 5 times as much (per mg of active ingredients) as the ephedrine-based "supplements" sold in convenience stores, so guess which one I try to buy? Unfortunately, some of the convenience stores which used to carry the cheapest versions have either stopped carrying it or have been out for long periods since such incidents as the one above have been in the news. If it's banned entirely, the only option for those who use it for this purpose will be even-more-expensive Rx drugs, again further squeezing those who because of their illness have little to spend on all their needs because they are on fixed incomes from disability benefits or only able to work at most part time . . .
