I was listening to NPR this morning and they had a nice report on the
situation with North Korea. At some point they ran a comment from a person
expressing concern that one side or the other might make a miscalculation
and "the situation might spiral out of control". I think the person meant
that we'd end up in a full-fledged shooting war. I have been trying to
think of situations in history where one might say a situation spiraled out
of control like this. I can think of situations where a miscalculation
caused a war (the first Gulf War is a good example) but not one that could
be described as "spiraling out of control". I think the start of World War
I *might* fit the bill but I'm not up on my WWI history, unfortunately.
(The American Civil War might fit too, but again, I'm not positive.)

Anyone have any thoughts about this?
