Late - I'll add that I didn't care overly much for those two either, but _Startide Rising_ is brilliant, and _Uplift War_ is cleverly crafted, frequently hysterical (I laughed out loud a lot, and still do upon re-reading), and has some of the best male-female characterizations and dynamics I've ever read.
